The African academic world cannot bury its head in the sand regarding debates on artificial intelligence. Even intellectuals wary of or categorically opposed to it must understand its true nature and the issues before any rational response. Historically, artificial intelligence has its roots in the first half of the 20th century, a period during which science fiction popularized the concept of an intelligent robot (Anyowa 2017, Crevier 1993, Boden 2018, Nilson 2010, Pickover 2022, Wilson 2022, Wooldridge 2021). However, a more in-depth analysis of the motivations and objectives pursued by artificial intelligence reveals aspects that transcend historical spheres. This article aims precisely at an academic consideration of the genesis of the phenomenon, a sine qua non-condition for laying the foundations for contextual strategies in Africa. Speaking of strategy, it must be noted that it will necessarily be plural due to the African continent’s geographical, linguistic, religious, cultural, and socio-political diversity. Added to this is its youth with its dynamic character and population (projected by certain respectable futurologists as the strongest by 2100).

Strategies will also be contextual because people’s needs vary according to countries, regions, and communities. An approach that is both holistic and pragmatic seems essential. In a systematic and practical approach, this study offers a journey into the past before any reflection on the future. Thus, Africa will need more than just reacting or choosing between several prefabricated approaches. Still, it will chart its path according to its actual needs, priorities, and values ​​that are dear to it after having seriously measured international competition. With this objective in focus, the author begins his communication with the importance and challenges of the subject before defining the key concepts, presenting the methodology, providing a historical overview, and specifying the main motivations and objectives of artificial intelligence, measuring the trajectory of related theories and practices and proposing educational strategies in Africa.

L’univers académique africain ne saurait jouer à la politique d’autruche face aux débats sur l’intelligence artificielle. Même les intellectuels qui s’en méfient ou s’y opposent catégoriquement ont le devoir d’en comprendre la vraie nature et les enjeux avant toute réponse rationnelle.  
Historiquement, l’intelligence artificielle plonge ses racines dans la première moitié du 20e siècle, période pendant laquelle la science-fiction a vulgarisé le concept de robot intelligent (Anyowa 2017, Crevier 1993, Boden 2018, Nilson 2010, Pickover 2022, Wilson 2022, Wooldridge 2021). Toutefois, une analyse plus approfondie des motivations et des objectifs poursuivis par l’intelligence artificielle révèle des aspects qui transcendent les sphères historiques. Cet article vise justement à une considération académique de la genèse du phénomène, condition sine qua non pour poser véritablement les jalons de stratégies contextuelles en Afrique. 
Parlant de stratégies, force est de relever qu’elles seront nécessairement plurielles du fait de la diversité géographique, linguistique, religieuse, culturelle et socio-politique du continent africain. A cela s’ajoute sa jeunesse avec son caractère dynamique et sa population (projetée par certains futurologues respectables comme la plus forte à l’horizon 2100). Elles seront également contextuelles car les besoins des populations varient selon les pays, les régions, voire les communautés. Une approche à la fois holistique et pragmatique semble incontournable.
Dans une démarche à la fois méthodique et  utilitaire, cette étude propose un voyage dans le passé avant toute réflexion sur l’avenir. Ainsi, l’Afrique ne se contentera pas de réagir ou de choisir entre plusieurs approches préfabriquées, mais de tracer sa propre voie en fonction de ses besoins réels, de ses priorités et des valeurs qui lui sont chères, après avoir sérieusement mesuré la compétition internationale. 
Avec cet objectif en point de mire, l’auteur commence sa communication par l’importance et les enjeux du sujet avant de définir les concepts clés, présenter la méthodologie, faire un survol historique, préciser les principales motivations et objectifs de l’intelligence artificielle, mesurer la trajectoire actuelle des théories et pratiques y relatives et, finalement, de proposer des stratégies éducatives en contexte africain.
