A biblical model for a time of visitation
After the glorious ascension of our Lord, approximately one hundred and twenty disciples gathered in the upper room to persevere in prayer.
It was in this context of unity, fervor, and confident expectation that the Holy Spirit descended, giving birth to the missionary movement that, to this day, transforms countless lives.
We firmly believe that the same God is still at work when His people stand before Him with faithfulness and perseverance.
His promises remain certain:
-“Call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you” (Psalm 50:15)
-“Ask, and it will be given to you” (Matthew 7:7-11)
-“If two of you agree on earth about anything you ask…” (Matthew 18:19)
-“Whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it…” (Matthew 21:22)
-“If you ask anything in my name…” (John 14:14)
-“If you remain in me and my words remain in you…” (John 15:7)
Our Lord himself lived a life of intense prayer; the apostles made it an absolute priority:
-“But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” (Acts 6:4)
The history of the Church, including this profound African proverb — « If the pot is boiling, it’s because there’s fire underneath » — reminds us that prayer is the fire behind all missionary work.
Acts 1:12-15: « 12 Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day’s walk from the city. 13 When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. 14 They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. 15 In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty).«
